License to Cook - Training Opportunities
Licence to Cook is a government-funded programme to increase the teaching of practical cooking skills in schools.
Licence to Cook is an entitlement for all students in maintained secondary schools in England. It provides a programme to enable students to learn to cook and understand the principles of diet and nutrition, health and safety and wise food shopping.
From September 2008, schools need to be ready for the revised key stage 3 design and technology curriculum and to begin supporting those students who want to gain a Licence to Cook. The Licence to Cook team is offering training to all maintained secondary schools in England until March 2009.
Schools in England may access the Licence to Cook programme and resources through these free training events. Once trained, all teachers and students can access the programme through the Licence to Cook online resources. Schools can use these materials flexibly, either to enhance established schemes of work, or to provide full support where curriculum plans are not yet in place.

Ensuring that everyone who works in schools has the skills and knowledge to provide good food during school hours, is essential to the long term health and welfare of our children and young people. The School FEAST network, (part of the School Food Trust), will ensure that today’s caterers and cooks will gain the skills they need and that the quality and motivation of future generations of providers will be maintained.
The School FEAST network will, over time, support everyone involved in providing school meals and their employers, to access training and qualifications. In meeting this challenge, every member of the network will provide a comprehensive package of training and qualifications, from hands-on cookery lessons to formal qualifications at NVQ Level 2 and beyond. This is an excellent opportunity for all those involved in providing school meals to improve their skills and qualifications.

 Food Partnerships and Training
A Food Partnership is a continuing professional development (CPD) programme organised between a secondary school and its family of feeder primary schools. It may also have support from LEA personnel or outside bodies and organisations. The aim of the partnership is to develop food and nutrition education, specifically practical work with food, as a key learning activity.
A handbook has been developed which can be used by any secondary food specialist teacher who wishes to run a Food Partnership with their local primary schools. In addition, it may be used by a local adviser or healthy schools co-ordinator to set up a number of partnerships in their local area between schools. The Food in Schools website also
